What are Dental Implants?
Tooth loss is a dental health problem that affects many Americans at some point in their life. Over the years, modern dentistry perfected tooth restoration treatments to lead us to the permanent and advanced solution of dental implants. Dental implants set the standard in tooth restoration. Most people think of dental implants as a simple replacement tooth, but it’s actually a lot more advanced than this.
The Technology Behind Dental Implants
Tooth implants are an advanced prosthetic system that are made of three main components: the fixture, the abutment, and the crown. Each element of the implant plays an advanced role in treating all of the detrimental health effects of tooth loss. You can think of a dental implant as being similar to an iceberg. The majority of the work is done under the surface by the fixture and the crown serves as the beautiful glacial tip.
- Implant Fixture: The implant fixture is the first part of the implant system that are placed into your gums. The fixture made out of titanium alloy insert. I know, that sounds complicated. Basically, a titanium-alloy insert is an incredibly durable titanium screw that isn’t harmful to your gums. In fact, it’s healthy for your gums, because it’s able to fuse directly to your bone tissue. You can think of the fixture as the “root” of your tooth. After the fixture is installed, the jaw begins to generate bone tissue that wraps around and through the fixture to securely keep everything in place. The biological fusion of the jaw bone to the fixture is a process known as osseointegration. Since this process is super important, we’ll talk more about it later.
- Abutment: The abutment is a small titanium connector that is fastened to the fixture. The abutment is sometimes called a “post.” The post is an important piece of technology because it’s the mechanism that secures the crown to the fixture.
- Crown: The crown is the visible part of your implant. It’s also known as a dental prosthesis. Dr. Cooper will uniquely fit your crown in his San Jose office, so you can have optimal comfort, fit, and appearance. Your crown will be matched to your natural teeth’s color, size, and shape, so your new tooth will blend with your other teeth.
